Indie documentary “Life, Animated” tells the story of Owen Suskind, a young man with autism who grew up understanding emotions and relationships through the lens of Disney’s animation catalogue.
Our design for the film’s titles and interstitials are inspired by home movies and memories of Owen’s childhood. In a nod to Owen’s extensive collection of sketchbooks, we gave cel animation a paper treatment and sketched over home video stills to create pencil portraits of Owen and his family. Paper textures were shot with a slider to create backplates for the animated line work.
“Life, Animated” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016, director Roger Ross Williams won the award for Best Director - U.S. documentary. The film has since been bought by The Orchard for wider theatrical release later this year.
